A vertical hike for those who love ropes and verticality

 

I suggest that you come discover and work on rope handling in one of the major and technical canyons of the Atlantic Pyrenees.

Rope techniques and of progress will be on the programme for this descent. The opportunity to perfect your techniques and learn to Equipping and de-equipping stunts. The Besse canyon is ideal for training in a vertical environment.

A canyon located in the village of Eaux Chaudes, in the Ossau valley

 

Located in the middle of the Ossau valleyon the left bank of the Gave, a little before the village of Hot watera saw cut through the cliff: this is the canyon of Besse.

This canyon, which crosses the cliff edge of the Besse plateau rises at the foot of the Pic de la Gentiane some 400m above sea level and ends in the Ossau river.

To access it from the village of Hot WaterOnce we have crossed the footbridge, we will take a path in the undergrowth which will lead us by a small climb to a path which will warm up our muscles.

After a good twenty minutes walk, we arrive above the gorges. In a few dozen meters, we are at the start of the canyon  (Day 1 Adventure canyon)

There is an upper part which starts from the Besse plateau and allows you to link about fifty abseils, some of which are technical.

Once you have put on your harness and received your progress and safety briefing, I will take you to discover the Besse canyon. We will chain the verticals which sometimes follow one another without interruption. If you wish, I can help you to participate in the de-equipping of ropes.

Learning about the rope management and The sequence of verticals makes this canyon a beautiful canyon with a vertical tendency that will allow you to launch into beautiful vertical adventures like the Hell's Chasm in Haute Garonne.

The Gorges du Bitet are located 10 minutes by car from Laruns, in the heart of the valley d'Ossau

Borrowed throughout the year for mushroom picking, for hiking to the Lake Isabefor ski touring when conditions permit, by sheep for join the hut of Cujalate, canyoning enthusiasts are happy to follow the beaten track to reach these gorges carved in the purest Pyrenean limestone.

A hike in a magnificent setting to reach the start of the Bitet canyon

 

 The Upper BitetTo begin the adventure, we will take a one-hour walk in the a magnificent setting, with a 180° view from the Cujalate hut. A drawn picture by Mother Nature, which is worth the trip. At the foot of these high meadows is the start of the gorges du Bitetwhich will open up for more than four kilometres before reaching the Gave d'Ossau.
The Upper Bitet represents a quarter of this renowned course.

The SHEM: a key player in Ossalois canyoning

 

Once the picnic has been eaten, it is time to put on the neoprene suit and the harness!
About three hours will be necessary to reach the Bitet water intake, the landmark of the end of the route. Indeed, there is at this point a structure of the Société HydroElectrique du Midi where Some of the water is diverted into the tunnel system and used to turn the turbines below.

On the programme during the descent This canyon is actually quite short in terms of distance, but one obstacle after another hit. The first reminder is followed by a basin, to which a reminder follows, which is followed by a basin etc., all in a very steep environment between two large steep walls. The river meanders slightly, to bring us to its last A bend in the road facing a panorama overlooking the valley bottom, very aesthetic. At this level is located the most large corridor waterfallwith a height of 17 metres. Once this difficulty has been overcome, a final A rappel in the middle of a long maze of large boulders allows us to access the famous water intake, sign of the gradual return to civilisation.

Canyoning is one of the most popular mountain activities in the Ossau valley during the summer. One of the most popular canyons is a jewel located near Laruns and runs through the village of Béost:

 

THE CANCEIGT CANYON

A canyon in Béost ...

The entrance to the canyon is above the village of Béost at the hamlet of Bagès. The approach walk is quick and easy (5 minutes downhill) and allows you to plunge into the forest to access the Canceigt !

The entrance to the canyon is carved in a schist which is crossed by numerous veins of calcite and which allows a gentle start to the canyon with 2 small slides and a first bath. Then, a short walk during which we cross the ruins of the mills of Béost, which remind us of the life that animated the gorge from the medieval period until the 18th century.

Slides, jumps, walking in the heart of the forest

 

Once past the mills, the canyoning part begins in earnest. We start with some small slides and 2 small technical jumps that we can bypass. Here we can see the first tuff formations, the gorge deepens as we go along and the scenery is impressive!

Slipping between the blocks ...

 

On leaving this first narrow passageWe descend through a chaos of boulders to the bed of the Canceigt, and from there we have the opportunity to get under the blocks for a few caving-type passages in a wet environment that enhance this passage.

 

 

 

 

 

One of the most beautiful canyoning passages in the Pyrenees ...

 

We then come to the part the coolest part of the descentHere we enter a part of the Canceigt canyon that is particularly beautiful and fun to descend!

A slide in a swimming pool, suspended more than 10m high with a magnificent abseil, to find yourself at the bottom of the gorge with water springs flowing on all sides. If you are lucky enough to be there during the daily half hour when the light enters the canyon...

A 13m abseil

 

After this 13m abseil, which is as impressive as it is easy, we are at the bottom of the gorge. There is now a 5m jump (which is the highest in the canyon) in a large pool surrounded by tuff waterfalls and limestone concretions, a delight for the eyes!

A unique landscape in the Ossau valley!

 

We finish the descent with a ten minute walk in the canyon to find the right bank exit!

From there, the only thing left to do is a few minutes walk back and a car shuttle to finish the descent!

The ski lifts in the ski resorts of Gourette and Artouste are closed for the moment. But many other activities are available to you to enjoy your stay in the Ossau valley this winter!

Aventure Chlorophylle regularly organises caving trips throughout the winter. Colleagues offering other activities are also busy! Here are a few ideas to keep you busy on nice winter days as well as on the more temperamental ones.

Snowshoe hikes

Snowshoeing is a unique way to discover the mountains in a different way. Far from the ski lifts and the crowds, discover the unspoilt nature. Follow the tracks of wild animals (isards, foxes). Recharge your batteries!

There are many snowshoeing itineraries in the Ossau valley. For example, you can :

  • walk around the cirque of Anéou (at the level of the Pourtalet pass).
  • follow the route from Pont de Camps to the edge of the Gave, which leads through the climbing blocks
  • or go to the Chérue hut (from the Sagette bridge above the Fabrèges lake).

Snow permitting, you can also walk on the Benou plateau (above the villages of Bielle and Bilhère en Ossau) and why not discover the cromlechs, stone circles full of history.

The Ossau valley, like all the Pyrenees, is full of places to discover in winter!

Ski touring

Ski touring allows you to discover a wild and authentic mountain, without having to use the ski lifts (which is a good thing because they are closed for at least a few more weeks!).

Whether you are a beginner or an expert, the valley's mountain guides have prepared unforgettable itineraries for you!

For a discovery of the activity, they will be able to take you hiking in the cirque of Anéou with the ascent to the pass of Anéou or the peak of Canaourouye with a departure at the pass of Pourtalet (at the end of the road going up from Laruns to Artouste, at the French-Spanish border).

From this same pass, for the more sporty, a 2-day ski tour will allow you to go around the mythical Pic du Midi d'Ossau, with a night at the Pombie refuge.

Caving in winter in the Ossau valley ?

We don't think about it much but caving can be practiced in summer and winter. Winter is certainly the best season for this activity. The temperature of the caves is almost constant all year round (around 13°C), so you will be safe underground!

So why not take advantage of your stay in the Atlantic Pyrenees to venture underground with the instructors of Aventure Chlorophylle? On the programme, explore magnificent underground routes around, for example, the villages of Rébénacq, Bruge, Izeste or Eaux Chaudes!

A unique adventure that is as much about sport as it is about culture: underground, you crawl, climb, walk and learn about the functioning of this underground biotope (its formation, its inhabitants...). And above all, you'll be amazed!

Canyoning in winter?!

But yes, it is possible! Winter canyoning is a unique way to discover a new facet of the mountains in winter: by descending its canyons! You will discover incredible landscapes, from the bottom of the canyons.

This practice is made possible by equipment adapted to stay dry and warm (the water is still cold in this season ;-)). Waterproof wetsuits and fleece under-suits will be provided (in addition to the classic canyoning equipment). In short you thought you were cold, with Lionel you will be warm to participate in the adventure! Here are some pictures of our last trip with our instructors to make you want to go!

Près de la source (Gave de Bious) c'est moins d'eau mais plus de pente, donc cascades, donc canyoning ! Près de la confluence avec le Gave d'Aspe (Oloron Sainte Marie), c'est beaucoup d'eau, moins de pente, mais des rapides...donc rafting !
C'est bien foutu quand même nos Pyrénées ?
